This Workbook contains extracts from the official documents, practical exercises for readers, and samples of resources such as scripture commentaries which readers can decide to go on explore, suggesting further reading and study. The material has been developed through use in workshops with readers and is recommended for individual and group work. Throughout the book, as in its companion Handbook, there is an emphasis on the Presence of Christ in scripture. The Reader is handling ‘holy things’ just as much as the Minister of the Eucharist.

Into Your Hands contains all that is needed to plan a funeral: the complete scripture readings and prayers of the Order of Christian Funerals, and an introduction explaining the different kinds of funeral service that are possible, and the meaning and importance of the elements they contain, scripture, prayer, symbol. This 2006 reprint also includes sample General Intercessions. In addition there are planning sheets to fill in, a checklist of what you need to know and do when someone dies, and a list of organizations whose task is to help the bereaved.
It is inexpensively produced, with a limp cover, so that parishes may buy copies in quantity to give to the bereaved and their families. At the same time, it is laid out in a dignified manner to make it suitable for private prayer and reflection, and as a prayer book for vigil services.
This is an invaluable book for clergy or lay people to use in helping the family to prepare the funeral. Together with In Sure and Certain Hope, a book for lay ministers leading funerals, it represents a new step in collaborative ministry, allowing those most involved in this liturgy, which takes place at such a significant and painful time, to play their full part in it.

J.D.Crichton (1907-2001) was a great and much-loved liturgist, pastoral in every sense. In the course of a long life and career he witnessed, influenced, and commented on the inspiring events of an extraordinary century for the Church. In this, his final book, he drew on some of his earliest memories as a guide to understanding more recent history. In the end, ‘the Church is people’, and Dr Crichton’s interest in people coupled with his acute powers of observation pervade this memorable book.

This book is not just an addition to the pile of books about school assemblies. It is a serious attempt, possibly the first, to see assembly as Liturgy, as much as what is done in parishes every Sunday. An assembly is Prayer, not a performance or a competition between classes and teachers. It is less complicated than busy teachers sometimes think, once basic concepts of liturgy have been explained.
I prefer to cut children’s spiritual garments a little too large for them to grow into, as they will in time. And who knows what vivid image or hint of the beauty of God will remain in their mind and memory? Dorothy Coddington
The aims
Julie McCann, besides being a teacher, is a musician. She is much in demand to speak about liturgy in schools to gatherings of teachers. ‘I have been a teacher in a large primary school in London for eight years. Over that time we have worked to change our practice in assemblies from class ‘performances’ to liturgies that reflect and form our identity as a Catholic Christian school.’ ‘In this book Julie has mapped out a journey of transformation; one on which she herself has led many children. Beginning with the basics, she guides us through actions to renew our liturgical experience. In a climate of curriculums it can be difficult to remember the importance of dimensions less easily measured.
This wonderful book helps us grasp the opportunity.’ Bernadette Farrell, from the Foreword
