Marty Haugen has joined with composer colleagues Fr. Michael Joncas and Tony Alonso to produce a new collection of 13 songs for worship.

Simple Songs for Worship

This absolutely delightful one-act play, debuted at the 1990 NPM convention in Long Beach, is easily performed by any parish. Two main characters, the "storytellers," retell familiar stories of salvation—creation, Job, Jesus—in musical renditions. Adult and children's choruses listen and respond in song and dance, bringing to life the timeless stories of our faith, passed on from generation to generation.

Simple Songs for Worship

Marty Haugen's new liturgical collection generates a sense of familiarity from the first note. The simplicity of his melodies coupled with understated accompaniments make these songs ideal for use in all forms of worship. A deep desire for justice in the world is one of the common themes shared by all people of faith and good will. We look forward to a day when our world will know a harvest of peace. In the Days to Come is an interfaith project centred on peacemaking. It includes Christian, Jewish, Islamic, and Buddhist texts coupled with music from North America, Central America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The title song eloquently expresses the desire for peace at the heart of the message - "On the day when we beat our swords to ploughshares, on the day when we throw the spear no more, on the day when all nations will cast their weapons down, on the day when we turn away from war."

Abounding in the Haugen tradition, the title hymn is a song of gathering. A wonderful liturgical mood for Easter is set by "Springs of Water, Bless the Lord." "On the Journey to Emmaus" is an arrangement of the Gaelic tune Columcille. Full of interesting rhythms, images, and harmonies, "God of the Sparrow" with text by Jaroslav Vajda was originally intended as a choir piece. "Morning Intercessions" offers a prayerful beginning to every day. The gospel-style "Bread to Share" rounds out the collection.
