A major publishing event

The publication of the Grail Psalter in the late 1950s was an event of great significance for English- speaking Catholics.
It is no exaggeration to say that until then the psalter was largely a closed book. The Grail opened it up and gave us a way of using the psalms in a way that respects their true nature, as songs. Its adoption for both the Lectionary and the Liturgy of the Hours has enriched the spiritual life of several generations of worshippers. Words and phrases from the Psalms are on the lips and in the memories of everyone who has grown up in the Church since Vatican II. For several years the Grail Psalter has been undergoing a revision, in the light of contemporary principles of Scripture scholarship, matters of authentic translation, and the requirements of Liturgiam Authenticam, the 2001 Instruction enunciating principles for the translation of liturgical texts. This revision has been undertaken by the monks of Conception Abbey, Missouri, under the direction of Abbot Gregory J. Polan, OSB, and ensures that the Grail psalms will play an important part in the liturgy for years to come. (Note. This version has not yet ben approved for liturgical use in the UK.)
A sample text is found below, Psalm 63 (62 in the UK Lectionary) one of the most familiar psalms.
The Revised Grail Psalms received a recognitio from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in the spring of 2010 and was published by GIA Publications, Inc. of Chicago, Illinois on January 3, 2011.
GIA are the worldwide agents for this version. In a press release of 1 December, GIA said that it is privileged to be the agent of this important translation and is gratified that this translation - many years in the making - will finally be available to musicians, liturgists, and worshippers around the world. Decani Music, GIAs UK distributor, is very pleased to be associated with this major publication.
There will be two editions: 1. The complete text of the Revised Grail Psalms, similar to previous editions of the Grail quality paperback, G-7882, £8.60 2. A pointed edition, or Singing Version, G-7984, £8.60 |
