An expansive, cheerful and vigorous setting, suitable both for a festal occasion (there is SATB throughout) or ordinary unison singing. The Eucharistic Acclamations are to be found in Glory to God, but here the mass has been completed with Kyrie, Gloria and Lamb of God.

'Chant' is not something dead, from the remote past, or old-fashioned. It is a way of singing the texts which follows nothing but the rhythm of the words and thus of their meaning. Chant is not tied to a particular time in history or even to a narrow way of seeing the liturgy.

John Ainslie's mass is chant written directly for the English text, not adapted from a Latin setting. Its flowing lines are easily learned by any congregation. The Gloria may be sung in antiphonal form, i.e. between cantor/choir and assembly. The composer recommends unaccompanied singing but there is an accompaniment version too. An Alleluia, a Lenten Gospel Acclamation and the Rimsky Korsakov Our Father are included.

Peter Jones knows how to get congregations singing. Not only is this setting eminently singable, it is also true to the spirit of the text in each part, the Lord have mercy and Lamb of God in minor keys and the other parts in the major. This setting has already been published in both the Laudate Supplement and Glory to God and is now available to an even wider public. Unison/keyboard.

Not to be confused with Bernadette Farrell's Mass of the same name. This is a revision of a Mass which has been in our catalogue for some time. The Kyrie and Gloria have been in Laudate, and now the Laudate Supplement, since its publication. The Eucharistic Acclamations have been revised and the Lamb of God newly written for this setting.

This setting, first published in 1967, was one of the most successful of the Masses published in the early post-Vatican II era. Like the other music of that time it fell out of use when the early translation changed - as is happening today. The 2010 Roman Missal is closer to that early version so this Mass has been revived, without much need for adaptation. The largest change is in the Memorial Acclamations, which have been woven out of the music for the Sanctus. Apart from the Gloria the mass is suitable for four-part singing. The Gloria is an eloquent, flowing, through-composed setting in free rhythm. This restrained, dignified Mass should be a valuable addition to the repertoire and a tribute to the memory of a much-loved composer.

Christoper Walker’s Celtic Liturgy (not The Celtic Mass, a quite different setting) has long been popular, but until now has consisted only of the Eucharistic acclamations. Now this is a complete Mass, with Kyrie, Gloria and Agnus Dei, and of course the three revised acclamations. The Gloria is a refrain/psalmtone version which is very easy to learn (a cantor or choir will be needed), and the other new items draw on the same appealing melodic vein as the existing parts.

A setting which first appeared in 1982, now revised for the 2010 Missal. 4-part choir parts are provided throughout, but the 'Simple Mass' tag is justified and this could easily be sung in unison and with guitar accompaniment. Two settings of the Gloria are provided, one through-composed and the other in refrain/verse form (which appeared in the compilation Cantate.) As you would expect from Chris Walker, this is melodic and singable.

A new setting by a native of Sussex and using quotations from two melodies from the county. Unusually this Mass includes two settings of the Gloria, on in free rhythm (to match the Kyrie Eleison) and one in more rhythmic mode (this contains one of the two Sussex quotations) to show how this hymn can be interpreted in different ways. The whole mass is based on strong melodies which will reward the effort of learning them.

The song Water of Life is nearly thirty years old. It expanded into a Litany (Laudate 512), and then a Gloria (Laudate Supplement 528). The setting has now been completed with brand new Eucharistic Acclamations and Lamb of God. Simple, tuneful music, extending the lyricism of the song through the whole Mass. Unison/keyboard.
