Decani New Music Packs

These packs have appeared at intervals since 1993. Originally they contained nothing but the latest Decani octavos but more recently they have included pieces from GIA and OCP as well. They allow subscribers to keep abreast of new music, although they can only be tasters for the very large range of new publications that are published invery year. Previous packs are no longer available as packs but the music they contained is to be found in the repertoire of octavos on this website.

Easter 2009

There are ten items in this Pack, of which two are small anthologies rather than single items - From Paul and Amen to the body of Christ. These will be dealt with below. The other items include two from a composer new to Decani Music, Peter Rowlinson. First, a setting of the psalm for Maundy Thursday, Ps 115 with the response Our Blessing Cup (DD-0296), a psalm to which many composers are drawn. It can also be a communion psalm for general use, or on Corpus Christi. Peter’s second piece is an ostinato chant, God, hear my prayer (DD-0295). The text is from Psalm 55, the cry of one in distress. There are many occasions when such an emotion is appropriate. As with all ‘lament’ psalms, it ends on a note of hope. Stephen Dean is represented by two Introits for feasts of Our Lady (DD-0297 and 0298). These were written for diocesan pilgrimages to Walsingham, when a large congregation is present; the refrains are designed for ease of learning. A cantor or choir sings the verses.

For Lent/Eastertide there are three pieces which mark different phases of the season. Behold, before our wondering eyes (0-20062) is a song about the Cross, which it calls ‘the glorious cross’, the Triduum idea. The music is in plainsong style and has different treatments of the tune in successive verses. The text is by the prolific hymnwriter Sister Genevieve Glen. For after Easter, Alleluia! Christ is risen (G- 5607) is a song of great energy and verve by Tony Alonso, whose music deserves to be much better known here. For Pentecost (or the Easter Vigil) is a setting of the great creation psalm, Psalm 104, Send forth your Spirit (G-6939). This version is by Marty Haugen and, as one would expect, is a very flexible setting, with a response in 4-part canon and an extensive set of verses (12). In the morning, in early light (0-20779) is from Chris Walker and Sister Paule Freeburg’s Morning and Evening collection. Intended for Morning Prayer, it would also serve as a simple entrance song for Mass.

From Paul is subtitled ‘seven and a half short songs.’ Inspired by the Year of St Paul (June 2008-June 2009), Martin Foster has set some of the most memorable verses from Paul’s letters: What we have received (1 Cor 11;23, simple 4-part round, The Spirit comes to help us in our weakness (Rom 8:26-27), with refrain and two verses; We are ambassadors for Christ (2 Cor 5:17-20), refrain and verses; Put on love (Col 3:12-17), ditto; Neither death nor life (Rom 8:38-39), chorus with optional verses (the half song of the subtitle); Glory be to God (Eph 3:20-21), a seven part round with harmonised vocal accompaniment; and May the peace of God (Phil 4:7), a chorus. These have a myriad of uses, particularly at sacramental rites.
