Bob Hurd

Bob Hurd’s collections are characterised by deep liturgical and theological awareness, and are designed to address particular ritual needs, in this case particularly the Communion Song. He himself says ‘What does it mean that Christ gives himself to us as our food and drink? And when we receive him, what are we getting ourselves into? This is the territory explored in this new collection Dining in the Kingdom.’

In previous collections, A Lenten Journey and One with the Risen Lord, Bob approached the communion song as an echo of the day’s readings. This collection focuses on the Eucharistic rite itself: the action of sharing in the body and blood of Christ. This approach allows these songs of unity to be used all year long, not only when specific lyrical lines are referenced in the readings. As well as nine communion songs there are three songs about Gathering, a central theme of the Eucharist. The musical arrangements include lavish choral and instrumental parts, but as usual all the songs are singable by any congregation.

For 10 years Bob Hurd and Anawim (Barbara Bridge, John Gilb, Marie Hodgson, and Dominic MacAller) recorded some of this country’s most popular and widely used worship music, demonstrating the ministry of the liturgical ensemble at its best. This collection brings together songs from their earlier recordings, Roll Down the Ages, Everlasting Your Love and Behold the Cross.

God’s Eye Is on the Sparrow is a welcome new compilation of some of the church’s best music from the past 25 years. The Octavo Packet includes the entire Roll Down the Ages Mass.

"The future of liturgical music," Bob believes, "lies in singing the ritual itself - not just singing songs at various points in the ritual." In his chantstyle Ubi Caritas, many of the sections are "through-sung," enabling the assembly to literally sing the liturgy. The singing in the Gathering Rite, for example, is continuous, including simple chant settings for the Sign of the Cross, the Greeting, the Invitation and the Opening Prayer. All the parts are easy to sing, all within the reach of typical presiders and assemblies. There are five seasonal settings of the Gathering Rite, an a cappella chant setting for the Eucharistic Prayer for Masses for Various Needs and Occasions and a multilingual Prayer of the Faithful.

Celebrating the Mystery of the Church

We cannot truly celebrate the mystery of Christ without also celebrating the mystery of the church, sign and instrument of his risen presence to the world: this is the thread running through Holy Is the Temple. It is intended both for regular Sunday liturgy and occasions such as the dedication or anniversary of a church. In either context, this music invites the assembly to embrace anew its mission as the Body of Christ.

The 16 original songs reflect a diversity of styles, including hymnody, chant, contemporary and world music. Bob has written new settings for the Sprinkling Rite, Gloria, Alleluia, Lamb of God and several psalms. This inspired music can be used for gathering, preparation, communion and sending forth, as well as the specific components of the rite of dedication.

The Stories and Scriptures of Lent in Song

This collaboration of Bob Hurd and Anawim (Barbara Bridge, John Gilb, Marie Hodgson and Dominic MacAller) provides a repertoire for the Lenten season, from Ash Wednesday to the Fifth Sunday. It offers songs for general use, for gathering, preparation and reconciliation, and settings of the seasonal psalms (for Years A, B and C), all of which also appear as assigned psalms on specific Sundays.

A Lenten Journey also contains a Communion (or preparation) song for each Sunday in all three cycles. These songs highlight the shared themes and images that emerge across the three readings of each Sunday and help the assembly to a more prayerful hearing of the Word, even as we are receiving Christ, the Word, in Communion. Thesongs feature traditional and contemporary styling. "The Good Shepherd" is a rousing gospel number speaking of the One who "lays down his life for the sheep." Instrumentation ranges from simple arrangements for solo voice and piano to grand settings for oboe and other winds, guitar, cello and other strings, trumpet, organ and choir.

The Scriptures of Easter Season in Song

The Easter Vigil may be the high point of the liturgical year, but it’s only the start of the long Easter season. After weeks of planning that one grand liturgy, music directors then find themselves facing the fifty days of Easter. Offering a total of 17 songs, the latest collection from Bob Hurd and Anawim provides music for the entire Easter season, from the Vigil to Pentecost. In many ways, it does for Easter what A Lenten Journey does for Lent. Though many of these are intended as Communion songs, they are equally appropriate for preparation and post-Communion.

Echoing and responding to the second Sunday’s doubting Thomas story, Though Not Seeing You expresses gratitude to Christ for his unseen presence in our lives. A strong new work for Ascension, I, the Lord, Am with You Always reminds us that the church is now the body through which the risen Lord carries out his mission.Filled with the Spirit is an energetic, gospel-style song for Pentecost. In addition to songs specific to each Sunday’s readings, One with the Risen Lord also provides general seasonal music, including the common responsorial psalms and a Gospel acclamation with verses for each Sunday.

The seasonal themes of light and peace are reflected beautifully in Litany of Peace and Ke Bona Leseli/I Have Seen the Light, both by Barbara Bridge, long-time collaborator with Bob and member of Anawim. Featuring a meditative refrain inspired by the prayer of St. Francis, the litany is suited for intercessions, preparation of the gifts and Communion.

One with the Risen Lord is an invitation to union with the risen Christ. Designed to harmonize liturgies throughout Easter, it’s a blessing for all who observe and prepare music for this holy season.

Praying the Mysteries with Scripture, Song and Icons

Inspired by Pope John Paul’s letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, A Contemplative Rosary invites us to rediscover the rosary as contemplative prayer. Designed for both communal and individual recitation, it engages the whole person through music, Scripture, icons and meditations.

Music : Allows you to fully ’sing the rosary‘, with simple chant settings for the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory be, together with several pieces for gathering and preparation, and a song for sending forth. The CD illustrates how A Contemplative Rosary might sound in its most communal form, prayed in a church with an assembly, presider, choir and readers. It features the new Luminous Mysteries (recordings for the other mysteries are in preparation). It can also serve as accompaniment for individual and small group recitation.

Icons: The People’s book and CD-ROM feature stunning full-colour icons for all 20 mysteries, commissioned especially for this project. The CD-ROM lets you project the icons onto a wall or screen. Scripture & Meditations: There are Scripture verses for proclamation at various points. The people’s book includes biblical meditations for personal use, inviting the reader to delve more deeply into each mystery before turning the page to study the icon and pray the decade.

The books also contain enlightening essays by Bishop Michael Warfel of Juneau, Alaska, reflecting on the encyclical, which inspired him to initiate this project; by the artist Charles Rohrbacher, explaining how icons can help us encounter the living God; and an overview and introduction by Bob Hurd.
